"Swisher 66" finish mower" 2009-08-28

I bought my 66" Swisher finish mower to mow bahia grass around a 1 acre lake with a slope I don't like to drive too close to the water on. I also offset it and pull behind an older JD 48" lawn tractor and now my 35Hp Branson tractor for mowing 5 acres of flat pasture. I've put about 30 hours on the unit and have no concerns with reliability of the Briggs & Stratton 20 horse or the mechanicals of the unit. I've read reviews where a couple of guys have had problems with belts, pulleys, idlers, etc.

Other than a cut tire when delivered, I've had no issues and would recommend this to anyone who knows how to treat equipment.

I purchased the Brush Cutter version of this mower a few years ago to use mainly on open acreage. When it works, it does a good job, but the first day out, I had problems with it. Almost every time I've used it, I have had problems/repairs. I have replaced numerous belts. I believe while cutting heavy brush, the load on the blade increases, causing the belt to slip, burn and eventually break. The first time I used it, the large nut on the main pulley came loose and everything in the deck was damaged. Another time, the idler pulley assembly came loose, causing the belt to fly off and at the same time, take out the wiring from the clutch and destroy everything in its path. This thing is poorly engineered. I just made repairs again, against my better judgment, took it out to cut brush, not saplings, and the idler assembly loosened again. I put it back together and 1/2 hour later, the belt once again destroyed all of the control wiring.

I had called Swisher initially when it broke the first time. They were nice over the phone, but very matter-of-fact. My unit also had an electric clutch that had to be engaged at full speed only or the unit would stall. It also has pulleys for two belts. They told me two belts was causing the clutches to get destroyed, so they went to one belt. That was my first clue that I was a Beta tester in disguise. The only place this thing is going is to my local junk-yard to be recycled. I will never again purchase a Swisher product. Some of their newer stuff looks OK, but the terrible engineering is what bothered me the most. My next purchase will b e the DR Brush mower. Good Luck if you buy one.

I reviewed all of the available pull behind mowers, and I chose the swisher because it was the widest with the most HP that I could find. Also, I was close to buying the Agri, but those folks couldn't tell me where to buy one, as Sears was out of stock on them.

For the money, this unit is rugged. I did, however, break the drive belt the first day out on it. Probably user error, as I had the tension too tight on that belt.

I rate it a 4 out of 5 because it is a bit loud when it bounces around, if you dont have a real smooth lawn. But I am putting it to the extreme, cutting a large area (4 acres) with various slopes, using a Polaris 425cc ATV.

"Failed to proceed" 2009-09-01

I wish I had taken the time to do more research on this mower. Since Swisher is located in Warrensburg MO and I am only 50 miles away, I though buying local was the sensible thing to do. I purchased this mover new in October 2007 and since December 2007 the mower has been in and out of service. Swisher will not stand by their 12 month warranty and Customer Service's lack of product knowledge is evident each time you talk to them - so be warned.

In order of problems:

1) transaxle failed after 20 hours. This is a Tecumseh transaxle and is not stock by Swisher, so you have to make arrangement sot order it and install it yourself - cost $440.00

2) blade pulley bearing seized after 50 hours . cost of bearing and service $186

3) hanging loose wire in belt pulley area ( a really bad design flaw). The belt catches and strips the wire. This wire touches the deck and shorts out, stopping the motor when the blade. Still have not figured out how to rectify that.

So you've been warned. For the price I paid plus the repairs made in less that two years, I would have been better off with the DRFields.

I have used the mower now for nearly 3 years. I agree the design is poor, but it does work fairly well. I am six foot three and the handlebars are set for a guy more like five foot five, but I manage. The lever that shifts the gears is poorly designed and made from weak aluminum tube which does not wear well when used as often as I have shifted from gear to gear. The design is not user friendly as far as the hand grips and the pinch effect of the user controls on the handle bars, but once you get used to it, and wear leather gloves, this is not so terrible. Engine starts easy, even after setting for five months of winter. This mower really went through the thickets of blackberry, honeysuckle sapplings, and other well entrenched plants. Some viney plants do get wrapped up around the blade center piece, but that is to be expected. I have the tires which require air inflation and at $87 a piece, the wear has been exceptional; but I have put in self sealant as thorns will go thru the rubber with ease. CUSTOMER SERVICE is exceptional; parts are shipped quickly and the staff is personable and proficient. I have used this machine well over 100 hours and on about 30 of my 80 acres; it does the job as advertised and I still have money left over for gasoline. If you want status, go with DR Brand and dont forget to mow your field with a POLO shirt and Docker pants on....but if you want a machine to grunt right along with you out in the field, go with the Predator...you get a good work out and your land looks great when you are done. I would buy this product again; not because I am a cheap skate, but I am a frugile shopper....and besides, I wear blue jeans and wife beaters when I am out in the field working. A great piece of farm equipment....now if the wife would just use it.

Excellent results with my Swisher Predator mower. Very minor problems with the grips as noted by other reviewers. I glued mine with contact cement and solved the slipping. Some bending to reach the transmission handle but even with my bad back I can do it. Highly recommended.

This thing gives you a workout like all walk behind brush cutters. I have some areas on my 40 acres that are too unstable to mow with my small tractor mounted brush cutter. After a year of use, this thing has done the job. Considering the price compared to others I gave it four instead of three stars.

Good:

1. Compared to my log splitter with a B&S engine, this thing starts real easy with a tug of the rope and some choke.

2. Price, look at Outback, DR, others and then you will agree.

3. Pretty stout frame.

Bad:

1. Head pulley bearing failed in the first couple hours of use. Warranty covered by local repair shop and no hassles from Swisher. New bearings do fail which I see quite often in my line of work. A little aggravating since I had to load the unit up and bring it home (100+ miles away) for repair.

2. Shift lever works itself loose. You have to remove a rear cover to access the bolt that comes loose. I may put some loctite on mine as it is coming loose again for the second time.

3. Sharp corners on front upturned brush guard. Repair shop guy tore a gash in his leg when he walked by it while it was in the shop.

4. Shifting into reverse is a real pain. The safety disengages the blade and you have to reach over to move the lever. Sounds easy but it is not much fun when you have the front of the mower pointed down in a ditch and need to back up out of the ditch.

5. Transmission hangs down too low. Numerous times I have hung mine up on the various rocks on my property lurking in the weeds.

pros..it works as it says. inexpensive compared to other makes cons.. too small a fuel tank so you must refuel often(less than hour run time), heavy brush will turn on choke and stop engine. to put in reverse lever down low in the brush area..should be up on handlebar area.

Disappointed in performance, is under powered for most tasks. The machine is difficult to pull behind ATV and get close enough to fence to do and adequate job and then is easily bogged down by grass. The recoil action increases the difficulty in doing a nice job of mowing.The postmaster does have limited application along ditches but again you must move very slowly to allow machine to keep running this can be extremely difficult even in the lowest gear on an ATV. I have owned the postmaster for two years but after initial trial period rarely use the machine. Very disappointed.

"Does not rake our leaves well" 2009-05-26

I see larger machines of this nature in the hay fields so thought it would work well on my leaves. It did not. We have a number of Southern oaks in our yard and many leaves in the spring. This rake did a poor job of raking them into windrows. It takes many passes with the rake and even then doesn't get them all. It might work well on a different type of leaf but for the live oaks and similar varieties it just down't work.

"Real good, could be better" 2009-09-12

When I was ready to hook up the mower to my wheel Horse I knew that set up was one of the crazest set ups I've ever seen. I changed the angle of the draw bar hitch to match my tractor and then rewelded it. This is a much better set up than what they had. After mowing the grass the third time I noiced the grass was really packed in the front j channel.I cleaned and rust proofed the channel and then took 1/16 strip of metal and welded it to the j channel. I think 3 or 4 more hp.would be better and maybe a kohler instead of B.S. I now have a mower that's easy to hook up, no more grass packed in front of the knives and it does a beautiful job of mowing. The other problem I had was the small belt broke after ten hours, so I replaced both belts with Napa belts

I put the swisher bush hog through the works today. The 14.5 hp peformed like a champ. Of course this is the first time i used it since i received it last month. I had to repair four wheeler first. It was rough cutting. Small stumps and limbs, going thru small ditches and old four wheeler tracks that kids had made on the property when the last owners had the property.

It was so rough even though i was going a slow as i could in 1st gear.

The Lock nut that attaches bush hog to four wheeler came off. So I went and got another and the shoot where the grass comes out, one of the nuts feel off of the bolts on that. Anyway I am well satisfied with the performance it game me today. I will get the property plowed up and cleaned up for next cutting and this should make it a lot better.

Well there isn't much more I can say.

My father owns one of these wonderful mowers for his 80 acre ranch and it has been extremely reliable which is why I chose this model for my own 40 acres of rolling hills, tree branches, and rocks. I rate Amazon.com and Swicher with "5" but working with Northern Tool has been extremely frustrating. I first tried buying from their web site (twice) and they said they could not run my credit card (then I found the mower on Amazon who ran the card and processed my order within a day). Two weeks later I finally got in contact with N. Tool who said they could not deliver to a P.O. box (my mailing address, they were given the physical of course the day I placed the order). Another week before I got in contact with the shipper who charge me for a lift gate (I do not have a forklift). Now the mower is here (a month later) and the advertized electric stater failed to mention N. Tool does not supply the battery (now I have to make a special trip into town to find and buy a 12 volt battery). Very frustrated at the additional charges and poor customer service! Buy the Swisher but not from this seller.

I reitred and moved to the country 6 years ago and quickly realized I needed help with 10 acres to mow. An ATV and a T-60 and I was in business. 5 summers later the T-60 was still doing great but after cutting rocks, bushes -- rough terrain, I needed to replace bearings and shafts. I used the mower for every pupose the company said not to and it never failed me. I even ran the same blades for 2 years because of the roughness and rocks. QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY!!!!! YOU WILL NEVER BEAT SWISHER FOR EXCELLENT HEAVY DUTY CONSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE. Living rural it is not easy to get service -- BUT I HAVEN'T NEEDED ANY!!! In the process, I found this mower on Amazon for a price DELIVERED TO MY DRIVEWAY $600 LESS THAN I CAN PURCHASE LOCALLY and I have to haul it. I couldn't resist, received the new mower, put on the wheels, added gasoline, cut 5 acres just to test the new mower -- just like the old one -- GREAT!!!! With no rocks, bushes or rough terrain, his mower will last longer than me.

"Poor Customer service" 2009-05-13

I purchased this mower on 05/20/08 and I have had to replace the belt about 8 times already. My mower loves the break the middle belt. This is not my biggest problem. I have used my mower about 20 times and the bearings went on the front wheels and the wheel now rubs the frame. I call Frank Lossman in customer service at Swisher who was the must rude customer service person I have talked to. He pretty said it was my fault and was just being smart and I even went as far as asking him why he is being so difficult and rude. He said he was just doing his job. Needless to say, I ended up having to buy the bearings off the internet and swisher would not cover them under warranty. They started go last year around the 8th cut. I was very surprised with the poor customer service. Besides having to replace the belt about every 3 cut and the wheel bearings going bad, it's not too bad of a mower.

It is hard to disconect and connect the quick disconnect system from the frame. Everything does not line up easy. I usually just leae that connect to the frame of my Grizzly quad and just disconnect the mower from the system.

Also the handles that control the height of the deck like to break off to and you have to rig them back on.

"Lot of problems" 2008-07-08

First, I have several Swisher products and am satisfied with the quality of the other products. I now have the mower working but this is after at least two years of more repairing than mowing. Until I made a couple of modifications to the idler pulley, it was impossible to keep the drive belt on. There are other design flaws such as bolt placement that will interfere with the belts. I was going to complain about Swisher customer service but they actually called as I was typing this review and were very helpful.

"Troubles!!!!" 2007-09-27

I had my mower about a month and the T39 belt AND the tension pully broke!! T39 belt provides power from the engine to the pully that drives the mower blades. The lip on the side of the pully broke off!! Never heard of such a thing. A month later the belt broke again. Now, one month later the belt broke yet again.

Also, the description talks about using to winch to raise the mower. No instructions on how to do that and couldn't find any attachment point to utilize it.

Poor instructions on how to get the mower started.

The ATV Quick Switch Utility System used to mount the mower to the ATV is a poor design. I had to fabricate some spacers so the pin would be level enought to hold the mower properly.

Operator's manual is VERY basic, of little use for trouble shooting of problem resolution.

When all is working it mows well, but oh my the problems I've had.

"Swisher 44" 14.5 hp Trailcutter" 2008-06-26

My experience with this product has not been great. The first time I used it one of the tires came completely off the rim and was chewed up beyond repair. I left the mower jacked up in my pasture while I had the tire replaced with a tubeless one.

The second time I used it the until inexplicably threw the cutter drive belt. It involved removing a bunch of bolts and removing the fuel tank to get it back on track. Another issue has been that the tow assembly is too low for my ATV even at the highest settings. This resulted in the L-hitch assembly getting more or less wrecked from the nose of the thing grounding out. I ordered a replacement L-hitch from Swisher but the part they sent was about 2 and 1/2 inches SHORTER than the stock one so the problem became even worse. Of course, customer service ignored my emails about this. I tried ordering a $50 hitch attachment which would raise everything by 2" but this was not effective. Then I built up my ATV hitch using long #8 grade bolts and 5/8 washers stacked about 10 high. This got it high enough but now there was tension on the mower cable which popped out of it's housing, nicked a wire and shorted the fuse. I taped the wire, replaced the fuse and had about 6 inches cut off the tow bar and new holes drilled. Finally things seem okay. I actually used it today to cut a couple of acres without event.

If you're intent on getting one of these, I would recommend spending a little more for the newer 52" model that has 4 wheels. This will obviate a lot of the problems I've had with it and result in a much more even cut. I think this unit is probably generally okay, I've just had sort of a bad run with mine. And I agree with the previous poster that Swisher's customer service is really poor. They just choose not to respond to stuff they don't want to deal with and that is unacceptable.

the machine appears well built and started right away. The assembly was hindered by a lack of reasonable instructions. The belt broke after one day of use. I ordered two new belts from swisher. they readily accepted the order and charged my credit card however, the order has been impossible to track. i sent 6 emails and no response. i tried calling 4 times and was put on automatic hold each time for over 30 minutes each time with no answer. The customer service is horrible. actually the term "swisher customer service" is an oxymoron. there is no service. I also wrote for information on how to install the belt - it looks like you must remove the engine. I hesitated buying this machine and was going to buy a tow behind Dr (although more expense). well i should have followed my instincts.

I paid about $1650 total in March for this mower on Amazon, including a $250 delivery charge. Even with the delivery charge this price was a bit cheaper than Tractor Supply. $1400 is a steal.

I manage about 17 acres of relatively hilly pasture and am very happy with this machine. Blows through small saplings and multiflora rose with no problems (swisher advertises that "if you can run over it with the atv, you can cut it with this" and nothing I've experienced contradicts that).

The beauty of this mower is that it does not know if it's going uphill. I mowed for years with an underpowered tractor and brushhog and had to hold my breath whether I would get up a hill without stalling.

The remote clutch engage mounts to the back of an atv, which is a nice feature. Also if you get the electric start the ignition switch is also on the remote clutch, so you can turn the mower on or off without dismounting the atv.

I pull my mower with a 420cc honda rancher with no problems even up some pretty big hills. Swisher recommends at least 300cc for atv towing.

Pros

--plenty of power.

--Can offset machine. Pulling with a garden tractor (swisher recommends at least 16 hp) would cut an 88" swath. Also good for cutting around trees or in ditches or cutting multiflora rose (saves having to drive over it and risking your atv tires).

--remote clutch attachment/starter is great

--easily adjust cutting height from 2-7 inches.

--articulating hitch allows mower to follow contours of land without stressing atv hitch or mower tow bar.

--Does not seem to bottom out as much as my old pto driven brush hog. Handles most bottom-outs without stalling.

--electic ignition. Save yourself headaches and get this if the wife wants to mow too.

Cons

--A fair amount of assembly required upon shipment, with not great directions. Took me about 4 hours from opening crate to mowing. You don't need to be a mechanic or small-engine guy (for example, the belt is already installed), but the instructions are minimal (though exploded views are helpful). It's a relatively simple machine, but you need to have some basic skills/knowledge.

--getting it out of the shipping crate is a bit of a chore.

--For electric start, battery not included (uses a stock small 12v tractor battery, about $20).

--Extra fuel consumption, since you are running two engines (tow vehicle and mower). Not as bad as I thought though.

--tows a bit farther behind than typical pto driven mower. Takes a little getting used to.

--comes with no owners or repair manual, but you can download them from swisher's website.

-if grass gets real high, the wheels can flatten it so that it doesn't get cut. If you are a perfectionist, may need to take a second pass perpendicular to first.

--made for trails and pastures, not for finish applications. If you want a golf-course look, you want something called a finish mower. Swisher makes these as well.

I think I like the Swisher - if I coluld only get to use it. After just a few hours of use, gas leaked out of the tank and when i took it off I discovered the tank was defective and had a weak spot in it that melted through hence leaking the gas. Sounds dangerous, doesn't it? I have ordered a new tank, but two weeks leter I am still waiting on its arrival. Getting parts is not that easy, as Swisher buys its engines from Briggs & Stratton. The end result - I'm not a happy mower.

The swisher has a plunger button that needed adjustment before I could start it for first use. The hitch bar is too light grade steel and bent easily. I stiffened it by welding rebar on sides. The holes for drop pins stretched out due to same weak steel. The mower did well but seems to gouge and scalp on hilly terrain if not vigil. Pulls easily behind UATV.

I bought my mower to help stay ahead of the weeds on some acreage where I live. At first it did OK, though it was always difficult to start and very loud. The mower was not as efficient as I had been led to believe, often making it necessary to make multiple passes to get the grass cut evenly. I assumed this was due to running over the grass with my ATV, but later learned it was because the mower deck itself was mashing the grass down. The mower lasted approximately 200 hours of mowing before the engine blew, putting the connecting rod through the side of the block. I was never very pleased with the operation of the unit. The blade engage cable broke twice the first week I had it and I re-engineered the linkage to prevent that from happening. When the engine blew, the customer service people simply told me that Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton make suitable replacements -- which are both nearly $500 to replace if I do it myself. I don't plan to repair the mower. There have been some design changes since I bought my mower, so some of the problems may have been fixed. I would personally get a larger mower with a larger engine if I were to replace this one with the same brand.

i heard that a solo 470-01 green blower could run forever without gas. well it's a nice idea, the perpetual motion. sometimes i feel that the snail shape of the solo green blower is a dream, it is inclusive. the green plastic is so outrageous and high quality it is superior to even the fabled cifarelli. hot air you say...it makes air and lots of it. but it is sweet. the only problem i found is the hp can blow the muffler gasket, it's that strong. i wound mine out so far it popped, and hasn't been the same since. too much power and too much air. it is the porsche of blowers, the german answer to the garden autobahn. gets dirty inside the housing after using it for 100,000 hours. love garrido

This backpack blower is great for any size yard. We have over 60 oak trees and it has performed well with no issues. This has to be the easiest power tool to start. I've tried a few other backpack blowers and this one is better by far. It's not only powerful but has less noise and lasts between 2-1/2 and 3 hours on full blast with the gas/oil mix. If you are looking for a blower this is the one to get.

Received unit and was missing the end nozzle. Also trigger linkage not working correctly. Started and ran well (though not able to control the speed), comfortable to wear.

Called Solo 800 number and talked to a technician -- VERY responsive --- they are shipping a replacement end nozzle and are sending UPS to pickup the unit to repair it in Newport VA (home office)and ship it back.

Great service so far - will try and rereview the item performance once I get it back.

That Solo makes great equipment is no secret - That Solo makes the BEST backpack blowers just might be... The Solo 471/472 are really, truly, very high quality commercial equipment that simply work better and harder than just about every other Large blower out there.

IN the past I've used most of them, including the usual competitors for 'top spot' among most landscapers, the Stihl BR600 and the Redmax 8000/1, Echo, etc... And while they all have their strong points, none of these seems to get it all right like these Solo's.

For instance, the Redmax blows pretty hard no question, but no harder than the 471 (the 472 is stronger) and the airstream is much harder to direct, they are REALLY a lot heavier (35lbs to the Solo's 20), very, very loud, and they have had a lot of issues lately including recalls, design problems and now the Husquavarna merger which is generally agreed upon to be a very, very bad thing... I'm pretty sure we're going to keep on hearing of the problems with these things. Some earlier models were more reliable, but not in the same class as the Solo's. The Stihl '600 is VERY popular, but again if you read a lot of reviews and opinions about this type of equipment you see the same sort thing. Continual complaining about the 4MIX engines, not nearly as powerful as the hype would have you believe, some pretty cheap plastic build quality and again and again you hear people saying that they prefer older, less powerful models (like the tried and true BR400) from this company for reliability factors. I don't really like mine, although it is much easier to use and direct than the Redmax line.

The Solo line-up is smaller, just three blowers, one hand-held and two almost identical backpacks, but a long history of design with backpack equipment (Solo also makes A LOT of the very best sprayers - since like the 50's or something...) and to be honest, I think that they are smarter for it. They certainly have all of the bugs worked out. I've not spoken to anyone yet with any problems at all. The two BP models have almost all identical parts. Easy to get too. Of the largest blowers, they are the strongest (see below)and the lightest -21lbs or so... with fuel... which by the way, gives you 2 hours on a single tank! And it meets the California standards....(noise AND emissions)

They are also know as EXTREMELY quiet machines (64db), which is a huge problem with all other manufacturers. Leaf blowers are notorious in this regard and this figure alone probably puts them on top for a lot of people. REally comfortable to use for long periods of time.

The specs are all usable, end of tube figures too(235/255 mph and 700+/900+ cfm's) which is a huge help when comparing - not to mention when working... Really, there isn't a lot wrong to say about these things. More and more of the pro's are switching over after bad experiences with the bigger companies. Solo makes their own stuff, and it really works well. And to finish, they a a little less expensive too...

Hard to argue with that!

I did SO MUCH research before I bought my newest blowers and these things continually amaze me. Simply better designed than any blower I've used.

I wanted a plastic cart because my dad has gone through many inwhich the metal rusted out or warped because the gauge steel used was not strong enough. I feel this cart will satisfy my needs for many years to come.

It was easy to assemble(about 1/2 hour) and it seems ridged enough to handle hauling dirt, rock, etc. I like the idea of taking the sides off to move tree logs, 2x4's or other long items. I would give it 5 stars but I think it is pricy. Plastic is cheap and they probably use regrinded plastics anyway so I feel prices could be more competitive with traditional metal carts.

One of the best features of this spreader is the removable plastic screen in the bin. Given the chunks that inevitably show up in fertilizer products it makes spreading significantly more accurate since you know you are not restricting flow with a solid mass of fertilizer covering the outlets that you have just calibrated. This is only available on the "commercial" Earthway spreaders and given past experiences is worth the difference in price. The spreader is well made but the bin/tub only holds about 10K sq ft. of product. The 2170 has a larger bin but the smaller tank on the 2150 makes this a very stable unit. With my lawn conditions, this was worth the trade off. The solid easily calibrated linkage also appears to be much better than a cable actuated meter. I have only used it a couple of times but so far it appears to be a well made product.

This sprayer is not yet designed. The hoses are too short -- by a frustrating few inches. The pressure gage is directly on the output of the pump and therfore oscillates so violently one cannot see the needle. (I will add a damper to prevent a fatigue failure of the gage.) The connector to the spray wand broke off during my first use session.(I have replaced the thin-walled plastic part with a brass part. I have replaced the cheap plastic hose clamps with real clamps to stop the leaks. The pickpup hose is curled so that the pickup screen would not stay near the bottom of the tank. I have added a weight to the end of the pickup hose.

This product is not badly designed. It has not been designed at all.

This sprayer does work but I encountered the following problems:

1. When full or near full the liquid solution comes out of the top where the hoses enter the tank spilling in areas not intended for the spray. The solution will also come out when going up or down hills if it reaches the hose areas.

2. When the switch is turned off after spraying, solution continues to drain from the boom at a fairly substantial rate. I have to turn the valve off to stop the flow.

3. There is no way that this unit will put out the maximum amount of solution that is advertised.

I also own another spray rig from Northern Supply that does not have the above problems. I chose to buy this rig since I needed a bigger tank and it has its own wheels. I got those features but I wish I'd have gone with the Northern version.

On the up side, it did spray well enough and with sufficient amount of herbicide to take care of my pasture weeds.

Everything worked as expected. The 25 gallon capacity helps make quick work of spraying a large yard. The long reaching additional hand-held spray wand is very helpful getting to corners and hard to reach areas. If you order this to be shipped, you might count on buying a couple of extra spray nozzles at your local farmer's supply store, as they are easily broken during shipment.
